Title: HowTo: X boots to a black screen Description: Install/Upgrade of software leads to a black screen
99% of these problems are caused by a misconfigured X.
The easiest way to check this is as follows 1. Reboot. Once at the boot menu, where you can select the operating system to boot, just select the entry for your Linux installation and type in "3". This starts your pc in what is called "init 3", "Run Level 3" or "Text Mode" (depending on terminology) 2. At the TEXT login prompt, enter "root" for username and your root password. 3. To reconfigure X, type the command sax2 and press enter 4. Use SaX2 to try other settings. 5. To restart X - type as root init 5 and then see if X is working.
