Title: HowTo: Setup a Serial Modem with SuSE10 using KDE
Serial Modem Setup for SuSE 10 KDE desktop.SuSE 10 does a excellent job of detecting and doing most of the setup of the serial modem. the following steps will help getting everything working right. Before powering on the computer ensure that the serial cable is connected between modem and computer. Check the phone cable has a good dial tone without static. This can be done by plugging the cable into a phone and listening. Turn on the external modem via its power switch (If supplied on your model or plug it in) before turning on the computer. This will insure that there is a signal during bootup to allow SuSE to properly detect the modem. Now that the computer is up with your user interface its time to use YaST to finish setup. ![]() Your modem should be detected and set as dev/modem0 ![]() Now click on the Edit button to bring up the setting parameters. ![]() Modem device should show dev/ttyS0 Dial prefix is if you need to add a number such as 1 or 0 before dialing out. Now click the button for details. ![]() Baud Rate: should be set about 2X your modem rate Therefore for 56K set rate at 115200 Make sure the box User Controlled is checked unless you want only Root to have access to the modem. Click the OK button than select Next. This will bring up the Provider Parameter settings for your ISP. ![]() Enter a name for your ISP in Provider Name line. Any will do just avoid spaces. Place your phone number for your ISP in the next line Do not leave any spaces! Now in the Authorization block enter the user name that you got from your ISP and check the block Always Ask for Password. (You will set up your password later under Kwallet) Click Next and bring up Connection Parameters. ![]() Don't check Dial on Demand unless you need to have your computer give rights for a program to connect automatically, this can be a security risk. The Modify DNS When Connected block is checked if your ISP provides Dynamic IP. Most ISP's do but if you use a Static number you will have to enter it in the Name Servers area. Some ISP's will need to have the Stupid Mode block selected in order for you to connect. You can try with it not checked first and if you are unable to connect, come back and check it. Make sure the External Firewall Interface is checked to open a port through the firewall for connection to your ISP. Idle Time out (seconds) will determine when the modem disconnects if no activity is detected up or down. Now select IP details button. ![]() Under IP address Settings check that the Dynamic IP Address block is checked (Remember what your ISP provides Dynamic or Static) By checking the Default Route button your modem will dial your ISP from the details set early under Providers Phone No. Click OK and Next. You will get a Dialog asking if you want to configure Mail. Just cancel and click finish. Now you need to set the Firewall. ![]() Configure your modem in the External Zone You do not need any Interfaces open unless you are Dialup networking. Accept and start Firewall. You should have a plug in your Taskbar with 1 strait wire. If you do not: go to Kmenu>Internet>Dialup and this will start the KInternet Program. Simply Left click on plug and your modem will dial and connect to the ISP. By right clicking you will bring up a menu with Speed, Log and Settings. Some ISP's do not handle IPv6 properly so you will need to disable it. YaST>System>Sysconfig editor >Desktop>KDE_USE_IPV6 set to NO. you can also disable in Firefox by entering about:config in address bar and find network.dns.disableIpv6 and click on line and select toggle to get True.
