Title: HowTo: Read The Fine Manual...
Description: Finding the sources of documentation

With SuSE there are many choices of documentation available to you

  • Use YaST to install the Admin Guide and the User Guide, these are pdf files stored in /usr/share/doc/manual - but through Yast you can install to /usr/share/doc/Books the Linux System Administrator Guide (SAG), Network Admin Guide (NAG)

  • For a command in the console you can type either:
man (command name)

or
info (command name)

These are different - and so may be useful. KDE users can type man://commandname or info://commandname in Konqueror. The procedure is similar for the Gnome Help Browser.

  • You can use apropos which is a command line tool that searches the man (manual) pages for
descriptions that match what you type after it.
such as:
apropos list

  • Using Konqueror you can browse through /usr/share/doc/Packages where installed software often leaves its documentation and help files.

  • In Konqueror F1 calls up the help pages.

These are just a quick smattering of the different ways to find help in Linux. I invite people to add extra ways to this HowTo via the discussion page.
