Title: HowTo: Login as root...
Description: The Root account and SuSE

Update: How to return to graphical mode added

Suse have disabled the ability to login as root via the GUI. That is by design. The reasons are:

  • Root is NOT a normal system account - it is for admin purposes only
  • Root can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING - hence any mistakes done as root can hose a system.
  • Not even MS recommend running as Administrator (the equivalent to root) - in XP Home for example, you can only login as Administrator via Safe Mode

As a result, if you wish to do changes as root, you have several options:

  • Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login to the text console as root. To return to the GUI, use Ctrl-Alt-F7. You have virtual terminals on Ctrl-Alt-F(1-7) and 8 is the gui.
  • Use "Sux" from a Konsole to run a set of jobs as root
  • For a oneoff command as root in a Konsole, use "sudo comandname"
  • For a graphical app, use Alt-F2 (Run Command) and use the syntax "kdesu commandname". In Gnome the equivalent is "gnomesu commandname"

Too numerous to mention. A browse of any Linux forum/site will give you plenty of reasons why not to login as root, or use root, on a regular basis besides for System Admin
