Title: HowTo: Configure Samba Client Description: Configuring the Samba Client so that you can print on a windows printer Version: Final Linux Version: Novell Linux Desktop 9 I think it's safe to assume that this howto should work for Suse Linux too as the Novell Linux Desktop is based on Suse Linux. We have a Microsoft Server network at work and I have a dual boot Windows/NLD9 machine. I assume you have installed the Samba Client and it starts on Startup. 1. NLD has automatically configured the network card and network connection so that I had full access to the server ... untill I stuffed it up big time playing with different Samba and network settings. So, the lesson is: if it works after installation - DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING! If you did, then see No 2. 2. In Windows command prompt do "ipconfig/all" and write down or print out the results for future reference unless you already know your network and computer settings. Windows IP configuration (obviously modified, use your settings) Host Name: COMP1 Primary DNS Suffix: company.com.local Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection IP Address: XX.0.0.YY Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: XX.0.0.ZZ DHCP Server: XX.0.0.ZZ DNS Server: XX.0.0.ZZ Primary WINS server: XX.0.0.ZZ In other words, MS Server and Proxy Server IP address is XX.0.0.ZZ
YAST
Network Card IP address = XX.0.0.YY Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0 -> Host name and name server Host name = COMP1 Domain name = COMPANY Name server1 = XX.0.0.ZZ Domain search1 = company.com.local -> Routing Default gateway = XX.0.0.ZZ Enable IP forwarding = YES -> Advanced -> DHCP client options DHCP client identifier = XX.0.0.ZZ Host name to send = AUTO DNS and Host Name Host name = COMP1 Domain name = COMPANY Name server1 = XX.0.0.ZZ Domain search1 = company.com.local Proxy HTTP proxy URL = http://XX.0.0.ZZ:8080 FTP proxy URL = http://XX.0.0.ZZ:8080 No proxy domains = localhost Proxy username = windows username Proxy password = windows password Routing Default gateway = XX.0.0.ZZ Enable IP forwarding = YES Samba Client Domain or workgroup = COMPANY Firewall Protect from internal network = YES Protect all running services = YES Allow traceroute = YES
Control Center
Local Network browsing Default username = windows username Default password = windows password Workgroup = COMPANY MS Windows encoding = koi8-r After all of these steps everything's working like a charm. And a few notes on howto configure Firefox and network printers: 1. In firefox, go to Settings -> Proxy -> and enter the same values as above 2. Go to KDE Printer Manager -> Add new Samba printer with Authenticated user -> enter windows username and password there -> Scan for network printers -> choose the printer you've got and test it. 3. There's no need to mount anything, just open Konqueror, click on Network and browse it, just like in Windows. (you may need to type in your server-directory address in the address bar) 4. Once you've got access to your server (say, Drive F, for argument's sake), you can create a shortcut on the desktop by right-clicking on the desktop -> Create new -> File -> URL -> Copy F-drive URL from the Konqueror address bar and paste it in the dialog. Then you can rename it, like 'N' by right-clicking on the icon. Good luck! Comments & Suggestions: http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/index.php?showtopic=16670∞ |
